In the heart of Bydgoszcz, a historic gem is on the brink of revival. The former Railway Management Building at 63 Dworcowa Street, a testament to the Mannerist architectural style of the late 19th century, is set to transform into a luxurious hotel under the City Park Hotel & Residence brand. This ambitious project, spearheaded by the Poznań-based Konkret Group, aims to preserve its rich past while adapting it for modern hospitality.
Historical Significance and Architectural Splendor
Designed by the renowned Berlin architects Gropius und Schmieden, the building was completed in 1888 to serve as the Prussian Eastern Railway Directorate’s headquarters. Its distinctive brick facade, adorned with intricate stonework and crowned by towers, stands as a beacon of architectural beauty. Inside, the opulent interiors boasted elaborate paintings, stucco work, and sculptures. Particularly notable were the presidium hall, towering over eight meters high, and the grand staircase that led to three inner courtyards, all nestled picturesquely by the Brda River.
The Vision for Restoration
With the acquisition over two years ago, Konkret Group has been meticulously crafting a renovation plan that honors the building’s historical integrity. The facade will be restored to its former glory, with damaged elements repaired, and the interiors revitalized to serve new purposes. The ground floor will feature a reception area, a hotel bar, exhibition spaces, and a conference room, while the majestic presidium hall is set to become a grand banquet venue. The upper floors will be transformed into elegant hotel rooms, offering guests a blend of history and luxury.
Proven Expertise in Historical Adaptations
The Konkret Group brings a wealth of experience in heritage projects, having successfully executed several high-profile restorations. Among their acclaimed works is the transformation of former barracks into the City Park complex in Poznań, which garnered prestigious awards like the Jan Baptista Quadro Award in 2008. Currently, they are also undertaking the development of Modlin Fortress, planning a three-star hotel within its historic Kadetów Gate.
Cultural Impact on Bydgoszcz
The renovation of this architectural masterpiece promises to breathe new life into Bydgoszcz’s urban landscape. As a rare example of turn-of-the-century design in official Prussian architecture, its preservation is vital for cultural heritage. The project aims to restore not only the building’s grandeur but also to enhance the city’s tourism and hotel offerings, solidifying Bydgoszcz’s place as a must-visit destination for architecture enthusiasts.
An Invitation to Discover History
Closed since 2013, the building will soon welcome visitors once again. In collaboration with the Bydgoszcz Local Tourist Organisation “ByLOT,” Konkret Group will offer guided tours starting October 2025. These tours will allow the public to explore the rich history of the edifice before renovations begin in earnest. Planned as part of the ‘Immerse yourself in Bydgoszcz’ campaign, visitors can register through ByLOT’s online platform to secure a spot in these exclusive walks, available for groups of around 20 people.
